GodQuestionsDoes Everything Happen for a Reason?“, by Rev. Mike Holly

Sermon Series: God Questions

While in high school, I had a friend who returned home one day from school and heard that his grandfather was seriously ill. His family of four immediately booked a flight and planned to go and be with him during this illness. My friend, before the plane took off from the taxiway, said a prayer much like this: “God, keep my grandfather alive so I can see him one more time.” When the plane landed and they got to a pay phone at the airport they received the devastating news that this grandfather had in fact past away while their flight was in the air.

My friend had an immediate emotional reaction: God didn’t answer my prayer and that must mean that God does not care about me. After a few weeks of healing took place, his tune changed. Instead of feeling that God had abandoned him in his hour of need, he began to look around convinced that his grandfather’s death had happened for a reason. He was sure something would change.

As his family returned to Aiken, life went back to normal. To his young eyes, nothing had changed. And that is when my friend left the church. Many people struggle with understanding God’s role in the world and in our lives. We know that God is active. We know that God is with us. But is God actively causing each little moment to occur? Sometimes we want to believe that God caused that wonderful moment in our lives. Other times, that thinking causes us to wonder why a good God would allow something bad like that to happen. This morning we will explore the age-old question: Does everything happen for a reason?

The Word

Jeremiah 29:11-13

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.
