Bluff Park United Methodist Church Presents MESSIAH by George F. Handel

December 10, 2023 10:00 - 11:00am  |  BPUMC Sanctuary

The Bluff Park UMC Chancel Choir will be presenting the beloved MESSIAH, by George F. Handel. This major work is an Oratorio that Handel wrote in a remarkable twenty-four days. The work was composed in 1741. It was first performed at a concert given for charitable purposes at Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742 with Handel conducting. The work is divided into three parts. Part one is the Messiah’s coming and the virgin birth. Part two covers Christ Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension, and Part three is the promise of redemption, followed by a prediction of the day of judgment and the final victory over sin. We will be presenting Part 1 and selections from Parts 2 and 3, concluding with the famous Hallelujah Chorus.

The work will feature four professional soloists:

  • Emily Black-Soprano
  • Dr. Elizabeth Knight-Alto
  • Dr. Roderick George-Tenor
  • Blake Denson-Baritone

Dr. Elizabeth Knight is the professor of Voice at University of Georgia.

Mr. Denson is one of the 2019 Metropolitan Opera Winners! He will be singing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York this spring in three different roles.

The Sanctuary Choir and soloists will be accompanied by professional orchestra members from the Birmingham area.
