The third sign from John’s Gospel occurs in Jerusalem at the Pool of Bethseda which means “House of Mercy.” Many people struggling with illnesses along with people with disabilities waited by the pool to be healed when the waters stirred up. One man had sought to be healed for 38 years and no one would help him get to the pool. Jesus came on a sabbath and healed him without placing him in the pool. This sign not only points to Jesus’ compassion but also to his authority as the Son of God and the Lord of The Sabbath. Practicing sabbath not only provides rest; practicing sabbath opens us up to the reality of who God is and what God is already doing in our lives.
