United Methodist Women (UMW) is a faith-based membership organization of laywomen within The United Methodist Church denomination. UMW members are committed to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ in community with other women and advocating on behalf of women, children and youth around the world. Bluff Park United Methodist Church has two UMW Circles:
The Joy Circle
The women in the Joy Circle are faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in heart, soul, and spirit. This circle strives to STUDY and then DO the mission work of Jesus Christ. Nine months of the year, they meet once a month in the Fireside Room hearing speakers covering current issues such as domestic violence, human trafficking, grief, social justice, etc.
During all months of the year, members of the Joy Circle are busy being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ…meeting the needs of the church’s Food Pantry, providing healthy meals at shelters across the greater Birmingham area, packing gift boxes for children overseas, providing diapers to families in need, visiting residents of the Promise Home, and participating in mission projects such as “Rise Against Hunger.” In addition, the Joy Circle enjoys fellowship in order to build community.
The Compassion Circle
The women of the Compassion Circle are mostly working outside of the home so they do not have regular monthly meetings. They participate in local and international mission projects, including mission trips to Chile and preparing flood buckets for disaster relief through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The Compassion Circle participates in yearly UMC studies and participates nine months of the year in local, hands-on mission projects including the Food Pantry, Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank, meals at the First Light Shelter, meals for the residents of the Promise Home, and other ministries and missions as needed. The women of the Compassion Circle also bake and volunteer for the Bluff Park Art Show and Bargains on the Bluff Consignment Sale in order to raise funds for missions.
*United Methodist Women have been at the forefront of movements for change, at times supporting projects initiated by others, striving to move with the times rather than be overwhelmed by them.
