ABOUT US

OUR PURPOSE

Bluff Park United Methodist Church is a multi-generational church family that exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the the transformation of the each other and the world around us. We are a congregation that is rooted in faith, in Christ, and growing in grace for those around us. 

We believe that growing into the beings that God created us to be is the most important thing we can do. God is the One that empowers that process through the creative work of God the  Father, the atoning death and example of God the Son in Jesus Christ, and the sanctifying power of God the Holy Spirit.  God has created a very good world (Genesis 1) but through the corruption of sin (evil) our world and every human is stricken with a condition which can only be cleansed by God. God is redeeming God's world and the Christian spiritual journey is the God-given answer to this problem of evil. 

That's a really big picture look at the situation humanity finds itself in, but Christ's church is the front-line in this struggle. Hurting people finding healing and peace, redeeming the world in the process. That's our purpose. That's your purpose. We invite you to journey with God alongside us to a world where "he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away," as Revelation says. We'd love to have you be a part of our family!

OUR TRADITION

We are a United Methodist congregation. The United Methodist Church was created in 1968, but Methodism dates back to John and Charles Wesley who sought to spread the Methodist movement they began as student small group at Oxford. At about the same time, people like Philip Otterbein and Martin Boehm were leading similar movements that helped people grow in their faith. Those two strands of Christianity came together decades later to form The United Methodist Church. Methodists form part of the holiness tradition of the protestant branch of the Christian faith. We use scripture, experience, reason, and tradition as ways of understanding truths of the faith and of the world we live in (with scripture being the "guardrails" for the other three). Our pietist influence keeps us connected with the deeply spiritual while we also value academic education in our ordained clergy. Metho

More About the UMC

OUR HISTORY

Bluff Park UMC was founded as the Methodist Church on Shades Mountain in 1908 with twenty members. Over 110 years later, after many joys and trials, we are grateful to still be able to serve and love our community and to honor the legacy of those who came before us.
