Hellenic Heartbeat in the Deep South: A History of the Greek Community in Birmingham, Alabama. This program recounts the “Journey of Faith” of the earliest immigrants from Greece who settled in Birmingham, Alabama and the tiny church they founded which would a century later become the only Greek Orthodox Church in the state to achieve cathedral status. The program also highlights the impact the Greek immigrants made and continue to make on the culinary landscape of the Magic City with some of the area’s most iconic restaurants that personify the Greek tradition of “filoxenia” or welcoming visitors into their homes.
